Station Encoding and/or Monitoring
Performance Depends on the Quality
of the System
If a meter system uses audio encoding as the basis for channel identification, there must be a documented set of procedures for assigning and maintaining the codes, and a comprehensive monitoring plan so that the service and its clients can know in real time that codes are being properly generated. If the meter system uses monitoring sites for matching station audio to samples collected by the meter, there must be a documented plan for maintaining and safeguarding the monitoring sites to make certain that they perform around the clock with perfect reliability.
Arbitron’s PPM system uses an unique, inaudible code that’s embedded
within the audio signal. Arbitron’s full-time staff of engineers and
technicians works with stations to assure that encoding is taking place. Encoding
is also monitored real time so that any malfunction is promptly reported and
rectified.
