Jazz and Classical Stations Take Four of the Top Ten Slots in May According to Arbitron’s Internet Broadcast Ratings 06.18.03

NEW YORK, June 18, 2003 – Two Jazz stations, JazzFM and KPLU-FM, and two classical stations, WQXR-FM and Beethoven.com, were ranked in the top 10 Internet radio stations for the month of May, according to Arbitron’s Internet Broadcast Ratings.

Jazz FM was ranked number three with 974,017 hours of Total Time Spent Listening (TTSL), the sum total of hours tuned by listeners to a given station or network. WQXR was ranked number four with 964,874 hours of TTSL; KPLU was ranked number six with 695,538 hours of TTSL; and Beethoven.com was ranked number seven with 631,256 hours of TTSL.

MUSICMATCH Artist Match was ranked the number one Internet radio station with 1,496,382 hours of TTSL. Virgin Radio was ranked number two with 1,333,140 hours of TTSL.

Live365 was ranked the number one Internet Broadcast Network with 13,518,061 hours of TTSL. LAUNCH, the music destination of Yahoo@!, was ranked number two with 13,289,183 hours of TTSL. MUSICMATCH was ranked number three with 5,758,968 hours of TTSL.

Background and Methodology
Arbitron debuted with October 1999 data as the world’s first streaming media ratings service. In November 2002, Arbitron acquired a license to MeasureCast’s streaming measurement technology and related assets. Arbitron’s Internet Broadcast Ratings is a server-side measurement, which captures tuning to participating streamed media channels by compiling a near census of Internet tuning sessions.

As Arbitron’s Internet Broadcast Ratings (powered by MeasureCast technology) transitions to a subscription-only service, some stations previously reported in the ratings have elected not to subscribe to the service and will no longer be included. The ratings may not reflect all tuning for the measured stations or channels since Arbitron may have received incomplete or unusable server data.

Notes:

1. TTSL (Total Time Spent Listening), sometimes referred to as Aggregate Tuning Hours (ATH), is the total number of hours tuned to a given station or network in the reported time period.
2. Cume Persons is an estimate of the total number of unique listeners who had one or more listening sessions lasting five minutes or longer during the reported time period. This estimate is derived using an algorithm that takes into account unique media player GUIDs, unique IP addresses and other variables during the reported time period.
3. In November 2002, Arbitron acquired a license to MeasureCast’s streaming measurement technology and related assets. Some channels that had previously been reported by Arbitron before the acquisition may not appear in the current Arbitron’s Internet Broadcast Ratings. Arbitron is currently working on reporting some of these properties and we hope to include them in the future.
4. The 128K MP3 and all Ogg streams for Virgin Radio/1215 AM & 105.8 FM are not currently measured by Arbitron's Internet Broadcast Ratings..
