RadioWave Joins Arbitron Webcast Ratings and Ranks Within Top Ten in February
Classical Music Internet-only Webcaster, Beethoven.com,
Remains Number One 05.22.01
NEW YORK, May 21, 2001—RadioWave (www.radiowave.com) joins the Arbitron Webcast RatingsSM and is ranked among the top 10 in the month of February.
The most listened to contemporary music channel in February, RadioWave's Hits Happen, streamed by Akamai Technologies, Inc., ranked number eight with 198,400 aggregate tuning hours (ATH) - the sum total of all hours that listeners tune to a given channel.
"The Arbitron Webcast Ratings illustrate the effectiveness of the RadioWave network, which includes MSN, RollingStone.com, ARTISTdirect and TheWB.com," said Bill Pearson, chairman and CEO, RadioWave. "With 7 RadioWave channels being rated in the top 75, the results prove that our focus on programming, end-user experience and co-promotions with our affiliate partners has been achieving the desired results."
In February, two classical streaming audio webcast channels remained among the top 10. For the third consecutive month, Beethoven.com (www.beethoven.com), streamed by iBEAM Broadcasting Corp., ranked number one with 741,500 ATH. In addition, Seattle-based KING-FM (www.king.org), streamed by RealBroadcast Networks, ranked fourth with 287,800 ATH.
Continuing its popularity, WABC-AM (www.wabcradio.com), a New York-based news, talk and information radio station streamed by RealBroadcast Networks, ranked second with 310,900 ATH.
Internet-only webcaster, NetRadio (www.netradio.com), streamed by Akamai Technologies, Inc. and iBEAM Broadcasting Corp., had two channels ranked in the top 10. NetRadio - 80s Hits ranked third with 292,900, and NetRadio - Smooth Jazz ranked number seven with 199,800 ATH.
"The fact that seven Internet-only webcasters made the top ten February ratings demonstrates, once again, that consumers are listening to programming that may not be readily available on traditional broadcast stations," says Bill Rose, general manager and vice president of Arbitron Inc. "This reinforces the findings in our recent survey, where more than half of webcasters said that advertisers should run webcast ads to target an attractive audience."
Arbitron Webcast Ratings currently measures 2,300 stations and channels that
provide Arbitron with access to their server data. These channels represent
more than 17 million total hours of tuning in February 2001. The rankings included
in the February 2001 Arbitron Webcast Ratings are based on those stations and
channels that have provided Arbitron with access to their server data by March
15, 2001. The ratings may not reflect all tuning for the measured stations or
channels, since Arbitron may have received data after the cut-off date, received
incomplete server data or some data that was not unusable.
Background and Methodology
Arbitron Webcast Ratings debuted with October 1999 data as the world's first
streaming media ratings service. Arbitron Webcast Ratings provides ratings for
streamed media because webcasters need objective, third-party audience measurement
to demonstrate the value of their audiences to agencies and advertisers. Arbitron
Webcast Ratings is a server-side measurement, which captures all tuning to participating
streamed media channels by compiling a near census of Internet tuning sessions.
This ratings report compiled Aggregate Tuning Hours during the month of February for listeners to over 2,300 Internet audio channels being streamed by or affiliated with ABC Radio, ABC Radio Networks, AccelerNet, Akamai Technologies, Inc., Beethoven.com, Beta Lounge, The BroadcastWeb Network, Inc., Cablemusic Networks, Inc., Classic Radio, Inc., Clear Channel Internet Group, Control Room Technologies, Corus Entertainment, CyberAxis, DiscJockey.com, Dublab, Entravision, eYada.com, Fordham University, GAYBC Radio Network, Ginger Online, GUS Networks, House of Blues Digital, Inc., iBEAM Broadcasting Corp., Live365.com, NetRadio.com, Northwestern University, NRJ Energy Radio Sweden , Pacific Lutheran University, Premiere Radio Networks, Public Interactive, RadioWave, RadioValve, RealBroadcast Networks, Rivals.com, Salem Communications, The Sporting News Online, StreamAudio, SurferNETWORK, SyncCast, TigerRadio.com, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Tennessee, and WCPE-FM.
