What is RSS and how do I use it?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It’s a free, easy and automatic process that allows you to stay informed of the latest content updates from Web sites you have an interest in without having to visit each site individually on a regular basis. These content updates you receive are called “feeds.”

RSS Feeds usually contain summarized Web content and links to a full article or Web page. In order to subscribe to and receive RSS Feeds, you must use a feed reader, which can be software or a Web application that aggregates your feeds for viewing in one single location.

Listed below are examples of popular feed readers:

Online Services Applications
  • Google Reader™ feed reader
  • NewsGator™ (Online)
  • My Yahoo!®
  • Bloglines
  • Rojo
  • NewsGator™ (FeedDemon, Inbox for Microsoft Outlook®, NetNewsWire for Mac OS X)
  • Firefox® (via "Live Bookmarks" feature)
  • Safari™ (feed support in the Apple OS X native browser)

You are not limited to using the programs on this list—you can use any program you choose to view RSS Feeds. Once you've chosen a program, follow its instructions for adding RSS Feeds. You can also subscribe to RSS Feeds through personalized news sites, such as myAOL™, My Yahoo! and My MSN®.

Note: If you are not already using RSS Feeds, you should choose the reader or program you wish to use and set it up before subscribing to Arbitron's RSS Feeds. Once you're finished, to subscribe to Arbitron’s RSS Feeds, simply click “Subscribe to Feed” and follow the instructions on the following screen. Note that you can also sign up to get feeds via e-mail.
